The National Center for Contemporary Arts presents "Horizons," a solo exhibition highlighting the creations of abstract artist Alex Kuznetsov. Drawing inspiration from the Belarusian landscape and its horizons, Kuznetsov remarks, "In the urban environment where I live, there is no skyline. Sometimes it is necessary to calm down and take a breath. For several years, I have been observing the horizons of Belarusian fields, typically from a car window. They possess numerous lines and dynamics, along with their primary static nature."
Kuznetsov's artwork delves into the exploration of space, color, and form, crafting "a series of interconnected color masses in space, situated along an imaginary line," as he describes. By sketching a horizontal line on the surface, Kuznetsov establishes a sense of perspective that encourages the viewer's imagination to roam. He points out, "Simply drawing a horizontal line on the surface allows our imagination to seek perspective. This is my current focus: I create a line for a nonexistent horizon on the format and, through color and the material's plasticity, I investigate its impact on perception and association."
His creations exude a sense of tranquility and stillness, reflecting the vastness of the Belarusian landscape. Kuznetsov shares, "Perhaps due to the similarities between these lines and the direction of movement in my paintings, I recently began to envision fields, forest stripes, and the sky in my mind. I started to perceive the image differently, as a series of interconnected color masses in space, situated along an imaginary line." Kuznetsov's application of color and the material's plasticity instills a sense of depth and movement, accentuating the vastness and enormity within his paintings.
As the first and largest state institution in the Republic of Belarus dedicated solely to the art of the 20th and 21st centuries, the National Center for Contemporary Arts is devoted to exhibiting the work of both emerging and established artists. By hosting "Horizons," the National Center perseveres in its mission to develop the Republic's art scene and expose contemporary art to a broader audience.
