Random Black, Lisbon

group exhibition curated by Tomaz Hipólito

Group show “Random Black” at Galeria Santa Maria Maior, Lisbon.

Alex Kuznetsov is participating in Random Black, a group exhibition curated by Tomaz Hipólito and presented by AZAN Contemporary Art at Galeria Santa Maria Maior, Lisbon. The project gathers fifty artists, including Pedro Cabrita Reis, Jorge Queiroz, Miguel Palma, Cristina Ataíde, Irit Batsry, Jeff Perkins, and Nuno Sousa Vieira — each presenting a single black work as part of a collective reflection on intensity, reduction, and the potential of one color.

For the exhibition, Kuznetsov contributes a 130 × 130 cm oil painting — a dense black square built up through thick, layered application. Continuing his process-based abstraction, the work resists quick readability and insists on duration, where black is not emptiness but matter, structure, and depth.

Exhibition dates: September 11 – October 3, 2025
Location: Galeria Santa Maria Maior, Rua da Madalena 147, Lisbon

In this article for Expresso, journalist Ana Soromenho covers Random Black — an exhibition uniting fifty artists under a single curatorial premise: that each work should be entirely produced in black. The show explores the expressive and conceptual potential of monochrome across painting, installation, design, and sculpture.

“The exhibition brings together a multiplicity of works that cross a wide range of languages and generations, blurring distinctions between national and international artists.”

The project, initiated by artist Tomaz Hipólito, highlights Lisbon’s independent scene and its collaborative spirit.
